DOWNERS GROVE, IL – A 19-year-old man faces multiple felony charges after authorities say he fatally stabbed a pregnant woman more than 70 times and set her apartment on fire in a suburb west of Chicago, following a dispute over a used truck advertised for sale on Facebook Marketplace.
Officials identified the suspect as Nedas Revuckas, who was arrested this week in connection with the killing of Eliza Morales, 30, who was six months pregnant at the time of her death. Revuckas now faces charges including first-degree murder, intentional homicide of an unborn child, armed robbery, aggravated arson, and aggravated cruelty to animals.
First responders were dispatched Monday evening to an apartment building on the 2300 block of Ogden Avenue after reports of a fire. When police and firefighters arrived, they found Morales suffering from numerous sharp-force wounds. Despite emergency efforts, the mother was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities determined that Morales’ unborn child also did not survive.
Investigators believe the violence began as a result of an ongoing transaction between Morales and her husband, who had arranged to sell a pickup truck to Revuckas through Facebook Marketplace. According to statements from law enforcement, Revuckas was set to pick up the bill of sale and return the vehicle’s license plates at the couple’s apartment.
Surveillance footage captured an altercation at the front door, with Morales attempting to keep Revuckas from entering her home. The confrontation escalated, and after gaining entry, Revuckas allegedly attacked Morales, stabbing her repeatedly. Police said he then turned on the family’s dog, stabbing the animal in the head before dousing the kitchen with chemicals and setting it ablaze.
Following the attack, the injured dog escaped the burning apartment and was later found and treated at a local animal hospital. No one else was in the apartment at the time of the incident; the couple’s 1-year-old daughter was not present during the attack.
Morales’ husband was at work when the attack occurred and learned of the tragedy through an urgent call. The victim had been expecting her second daughter in just three months and worked in the payroll department at a local children’s hospital, according to family members.
Authorities say Revuckas admitted to detectives that he committed the crimes, claiming he was upset about the truck’s condition. Prosecutors allege that his frustration boiled over and led to the deadly outburst.
Revuckas was charged with first-degree murder with intent to cause death or great bodily harm, intentional homicide of an unborn child, aggravated arson, armed robbery, and aggravated cruelty to animals. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
The Downers Grove Police Department commended the swift response of local emergency crews and said the community has been deeply shaken by the loss.
Court proceedings for Revuckas are pending as authorities continue to gather evidence in what they describe as an extraordinarily violent and tragic case.
