South Carolina woman who thinks she’s buying a puppy is ambushed and shot then set on fire

EFFINGHAM, SC – Authorities in Florence County have arrested three individuals after a woman was fatally shot and set ablaze in what investigators are calling a revenge killing carried out under the guise of a pet sale.

Iryanna Jarisha Fleming, 19, along with Daquinn Taheen Thomas and Nikko Christopher Carraway, both 31, are facing charges of murder, first-degree arson and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The suspects are currently held in the Florence County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings, officials said.

The incident occurred late last week near the junction of Atlantic Road and Springbranch Road in the rural Effingham community, about 65 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach. Deputies responded to reports of a car fire just before 6 p.m. on Jan. 22. Upon arrival, they discovered the vehicle engulfed in flames and, after extinguishing the fire, found the body of 40-year-old Dana Marie Kinlaw inside.

Kinlaw, a resident of Olanta, had reportedly traveled to the area under the pretense of purchasing a puppy. Authorities believe one of the suspects, described as an acquaintance of Kinlaw, lured her to the location on that premise.

Investigators allege the situation turned deadly when Kinlaw was shot before being set on fire inside her car. Responding deputies found the scene still ablaze, according to officials. The Florence County Coroner’s Office later confirmed her identity and has scheduled an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Florence County Sheriff’s Office representatives said the killing appears to be an act of retaliation connected to a separate homicide in nearby Darlington County. Investigators believe Kinlaw’s murder was in response to suspicions involving her son’s possible role in the earlier crime. Law enforcement officials linked the recent arrests to their ongoing investigation into the Darlington County case.

Fleming and Thomas were apprehended shortly after the incident, and Carraway was taken into custody two days later. All three face the same slate of charges as deputies continue to piece together the circumstances leading up to Kinlaw’s death.

Effingham, normally a quiet farming area, has been shaken by news of the violent crime. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue to gather evidence.

Officials have not yet disclosed further details about the suspected revenge motive or specifics of the Darlington County murder case. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions working together to determine the full sequence of events.

As the community waits for more answers, the suspects are expected to remain in custody pending judicial proceedings.
