Rapist Jailed After Victim’s Testimony in High Court Trial

BLANTYRE, Scotland – A rapist, Garry Cain, has been sentenced to jail after being found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl in Blantyre in July 2021. The evidence presented during the trial included a statement from the victim, Amber Niven, who was tragically murdered by her brother more than two years ago. The statement detailed the harrowing experience of the attack, which took place at Calder Park in the town.

According to the victim’s statement, she had gone to Calder Park with Cain and two friends. While walking ahead of the others, Cain pushed her down a hill and raped her. The victim received a phone call from a friend, who had been attacked by the 27-year-old, leading to her ordeal in Blantyre. The girl reported the assault, and Cain was subsequently found guilty by the jury.

Amber’s statement, given to the police, also revealed that she stayed with the victim until officers arrived, during which time the girl identified Cain as her attacker. The trial included Cain denying the assault and providing an alternate explanation for the presence of the girl’s DNA on his clothing. However, the jury ultimately found him guilty of the crime.

As a result of the guilty verdict, Judge Lord Arthurson called for criminal justice social work reports and adjourned the case for sentencing until January 10th at the High Court in Edinburgh. Cain was also added to the sex offenders register with immediate effect.

This case is particularly significant as it is connected to the tragic murder of Amber Niven by her brother, Connor Gibson, who was jailed for at least 22 years for the crime. It’s also worth noting that five months before her murder, Amber was raped by 20-year-old Jamie Starrs, who was convicted of raping another teenage girl in Bothwell and sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison.

In summary, Garry Cain has been found guilty and sentenced to jail for the rape of a teenage girl in Blantyre, as part of the tragic and interconnected series of events involving the victim, Amber Niven, and other perpetrators.
