Search Team Retracts as Brutally Shot Monk’s Body Stays Hidden in Nigerian Forest

Ilorin, Nigeria – Monks at the Benedictine Monastery in Eruku, located in Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Ilorin, are preparing for the funeral of their fellow monk, Br. Godwin Eze. The search for Br. Godwin’s body was met with challenges, prompting the search team to retreat.

According to Fr. Joseph Ekesiobi, a former Novice Director at the Nigerian Benedictine monastery, the team consisted of a vigilante group, members of the Monastery, the Nigerian police, and a group of hunters familiar with the forest. The team ventured into the forest where Br. Godwin was held captive, brutally shot, and his body thrown into a river. However, due to concerns for their safety, they decided to retreat.

Fr. Ekesiobi revealed that Br. Godwin’s father, who had also joined the search, advised the team to retreat when they found themselves deep inside the Fulani territory. The community had organized the search in collaboration with the police, and on October 26, the team embarked on their mission.

The funeral ceremony for Br. Godwin Eze is currently being planned by the monks at the Benedictine Monastery in Eruku. Despite the challenges encountered during the search for his body, the community remains focused on honoring his memory.
