Texas couple shot by the biological father of their adopted daughter

KATY, TX – A Texas man was taken into custody this week following the shooting deaths of his biological daughter’s adoptive parents in a quiet Katy neighborhood, authorities reported.

Norman Lee Johnson, 42, has been charged with two counts of capital murder after allegedly killing Christopher Lopez and Trinette Rayson-Lopez, both 52, at their Bent Springs Lane home earlier this month, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The incident took place in the early morning hours of Jan. 12, in a residential street about 30 miles west of Houston.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call shortly after 6 a.m. from one of the couple’s adult children, who said their parents had been shot. Deputies responding to the scene discovered a disturbing situation: Christopher Lopez had sustained a gunshot wound to his face, while Trinette Rayson-Lopez had been shot multiple times, including twice in the head.

Two of the victims’ adult children and a 7-year-old girl, all inside the house at the time, were unharmed. Investigators believe the shooting began around 5:43 a.m., and they found no evidence of forced entry, suggesting the suspect may have been known to the family.

According to law enforcement officials, the victims’ adult children were upstairs when the violence erupted and only discovered the crime after coming downstairs. The family describes the 7-year-old as an adopted cousin, clarifying that she was not a foster child.

Johnson, who is the biological father of the young girl, was apprehended several days later in Round Rock, near Austin, nearly 175 miles from the crime scene. The arrest was made by the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Task Force, and Johnson is being held in Williamson County Jail awaiting extradition to Harris County.

Authorities believe the killings stem from ongoing disputes over child custody. Johnson had previously faced a misdemeanor harassment charge in October 2024 for threatening Christopher Lopez during a confrontation related to custody matters, according to court documents.

In the earlier incident, Johnson was accused of making death threats after being told that any changes to custody arrangements would need to go through Child Protective Services. Court records show Johnson had longstanding family ties to the victims, having known Lopez for about two decades due to family relationships.

Investigators are also looking into previous incidents at the Lopez home, as records indicate there had been earlier calls for service.

Family members of the victims expressed their hopes for justice following Johnson’s arrest. They described their parents as high school sweethearts and said the tragedy has left them devastated but determined to ensure their parents’ memory is honored.

The investigation continues as law enforcement reviews the events leading up to the fatal shootings and examines Johnson’s prior interactions with the family. No further information about future court dates or additional charges has been released at this time.
