SAN FRANCISCO, CA – A man was convicted last week of fatally shooting his father and stepmother in their San Francisco home, a crime he broadcast live over social media as his 11-year-old stepsister watched in terror, officials said.
A jury found 27-year-old Irvin Hernandez-Flores guilty on two counts of second-degree murder with firearm enhancements for the deaths of Jose Hernandez and Yesenia Soto in August 2022, according to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. The case drew widespread attention for its disturbing details and impact on the surviving child.
The violence unfolded in the early morning hours of August 13, 2022, when Hernandez-Flores drove to the couple’s residence on Ingerson Avenue in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. Investigators said he climbed over a locked gate, then forced open the door to confront the victims as they slept.
Prosecutors described a brutal scene: Hernandez-Flores fired five shots at his father before turning the gun on his stepmother, hitting her six times. Emergency responders pronounced Jose Hernandez dead at the scene, while Yesenia Soto died in a hospital the next day.
Throughout the ordeal, the couple’s young daughter witnessed the killings. Authorities said the trauma she endured was compounded when Hernandez-Flores began livestreaming from the crime scene, showing his mortally wounded father and dying stepmother to viewers online.
According to officials, the livestream depicted Hernandez-Flores exhibiting no remorse. He appeared to show pride in his actions, even as his family lay gravely wounded nearby. The public sharing of the attack left many in the community shocked and outraged.
The defendant, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps, later stated in jailhouse interviews that he was intoxicated during the attack and only recalled parts of the events. He told investigators he entered the bedroom while the victims were asleep, and shot his father before turning the weapon on his stepmother. Hernandez-Flores claimed to have little memory of what he said during the livestream.
After shooting both adults, Hernandez-Flores remained at the scene to help his stepsister call police, according to authorities. The child, reportedly frozen in shock, required significant support from first responders and relatives in the aftermath.
The District Attorney’s Office emphasized its commitment to bringing justice in homicide cases, noting the profound devastation left by the killings. Prosecutors described the act as premeditated and especially cruel because of the presence of the child.
With Hernandez-Flores facing sentencing, the family continues to cope with the aftermath of the tragedy, while the community grapples with the consequences of the crime.
